Lay Past, Begin Anew
Let me lay my head
And wet your knee
With tears withheld
Long past agony.
A deep fear that
Patterns repeat
And deny trust
So true once more.
A second-chance wish
Became reality unexpected
And caught between past and present
A child’s heart beats in pain.
Lost and without control
The child hides where
Never again those too dear
Can be allowed so near.
Let the child lay
Head upon your knee
And cry her tears
And release her agony.
The child past cannot be changed
The present offers only comfort
The future promises healing
If she could believe in trust once more.
To change the pattern
That seemed to offer
Safe haven, calm seas
Her heart she must risk.
The woman for years lived
On the fringe of love
Awaiting the ending
Even in the beginning.
Safety in what was known-
That all can be lost,
Taken away, removed-
She never reckoned the cost.
The woman lays her head
Upon your knee,
Crying tears of rue
And bittersweet agony.
The pain is hers
And gave birth her shame-
That in evading pain,
To pain she led herself and others.
She blames not the child-
The child only ran from pain;
She blames the woman
Too blind to see the time of healing.
Let her lay with head on your knee;
Let her cry her catharsis;
Let her find that trust is worth
The pain of loss, the heart of one so true.
